London City Mission has distributed thousands of toys to some of London's poorest families this Christmas.

The toys were donated by local churches across the country and given to families that were unable to buy presents for their children because of financial hardship.

One recipient was a grandmother who is raising her grandchildren because both of the parents are serving time in prison.

She has to get by on a state pension and is unable to afford more than the basics.

Andy Witherall, who is based at London City Mission's centre in Vauxhall has provided her with toys to give to her grandchildren over several years.

"She is always delighted to receive them. As a result of giving these toys I've built a relationship with the family. I now visit her regularly," he says.

She has even started attending Bible studies at the centre.

"God is definitely working in her life," he says.

Another person receiving toys this year was a single mother of four.

"The father of the children is absent and doesn't provide anything for the family," said Andy.

"She is one of a dozen similar contacts who, if not for the toys we provide, wouldn't be able to give her children anything this Christmas time."
