Blind man realises surfing dream

Derek Rabelo has inspired professional surfers with his dream of surfing Pipeline despite being blind

Derek Rabelo was born blind but that hasn't stopped him from pursuing his dream of surfing Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu in Hawaii.

Beyond Sight: The Derek Rabelo Story is a documentary charting his extraordinary three-year journey to make his dream happen.

Camera crews from Walking On Water Films followed Derek through his gruelling mental, physical and spiritual training.

His unwavering effort reveals just how much the best journeys in life are walked by faith and not by sight.

Along the way, his perseverance inspires some of the best surfers in the world, including Kelly Slater, Gerry Lopez, Tom Curren, Damien Hobgood and Lakey Peterson, who all appear in Beyond Sight.

"Pipeline is basically the ultimate wave in a lot of ways - just a short, intense, dangerous wave that's close to the beach," explains Kelly, 11-time World Champion surfer.

"Many surfers with sight do not venture out even after they see that others can do it."

Walking On Water Films is the same production team behind Heart of a Soul Surfer, the documentary on Bethany Hamilton's extraordinary story.

They've teamed up with S4J Hawaii Productions for the documentary on Derek, which is set for a spring 2013 release.

"I hope that when people see the movie the eyes of their hearts will be opened to Jesus Christ," said Walking on Water founder Bryan Jennings.

Walking On Water have launched a Kickstarter
campaign with the goal of raising $77,000 for the project and are hoping that word will spread through social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
