The sequel to James Cameron's "Avatar" is expected to premiere on theaters in 2018. Meanwhile, the theme for "Avatar 2" will apparently revolve around family.

According to Cinema Blend, "Avatar 2" is planned to premiere on December of 2018. But there have been problems with film production dates, which might delay the potential release date of the sequel.

Meanwhile, the franchise will allegedly have three more sequels after "Avatar 2," and the plan is to shoot all four sequels at the same time. If production continues to work on all four sequels simultaneously, the release date of "Avatar 2" might get pushed back even further.

Director James Cameron will helm all films in the franchise up until the last sequel. The director is planning to create the sequels with higher frame rates with the use of performance capture underwater technology, which means that fans can expect a more visually advanced film than the first installment of "Avatar."

Cameron also served as the screenwriter for "Avatar," but he has tapped a few iconic writers to help him with scripts for the upcoming sequels. Josh Friedman of "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles," Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver of "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," and Shane Salerno of "Armageddon" will all be aboard the screenwriting team of the Avatar sequels.

Plot details have been scarce when it comes to the "Avatar" sequels, but Cameron and his team are planning to bring the story into new worlds and explore new habitats and cultures, which could mean that a new species other than the Navi people will be introduced in the upcoming "Avatar" films.

During the premiere of "Toruk," Cameron shared in an interview with Variety what the major theme is for "Avatar 2."

"The storyline in the sequels really follows Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and their children. It's more of a family saga about the struggle with the humans," said Cameron.

"Avatar 2" is expected to debut on December 2018.
