Humility is one of the key attitudes that Christ had, and thus one of the key attitudes that we should have as Christians. There are some benefits to being humble, and dangers to being the opposite of it – being proud.

Here are some reasons why you should seek to be humble always.

1. God is pleased with humility

The Lord Jesus, who is the model of humility, said in Matthew 23:11-12, "The greatest among you shall be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted."

If we want to be great in God's eyes and among men, we should seek to be the servant of all. This attitude of humility is seen in the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. He lived with this attitude, and was elevated by God because of this.

Consider what Paul told the Philippians: "You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though He was God, He did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, He gave up His divine privileges; He took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When He appeared in human form, He humbled Himself in obedience to God and died a criminal's death on a cross. Therefore, God elevated Him to the place of highest honour and gave Him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father" (Philippians 2:5-11).

2. God gives grace to the humble

James 4:6 says, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." This is a direct quote from Proverbs 3:34, which says, "Toward the scorners he is scornful, but to the humble he gives favour."

The Bible clearly says that God has no room for pride. When we are proud and conceited, God will oppose us, and deny us His favour – after all, we think we have it all covered already. Think about it.

3. Pride causes one to fall

If Christ is humility personified, then pride and being proud is the devil's characteristic. Job 41 describes Leviathan, a sea monster identified with the devil, as "king over all the sons of pride" (see Job 41:34). Do you want to be identified as a son of the devil?

Pride is the same thing that caused Lucifer to fall (see Ezekiel 28:17, 1-19; Isaiah 14:12-15). In the same way, pride will cause us to fall. Proverbs 16:18 warns us, "Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall."

Being proud surely leads to sin.
