A number of top aid agencies, including Christian Aid have written to UK Prime Minister, Tony Blair warning him of the difficulties that lay ahead in the violent and unstable country of Afghanistan. The warning comes as the country approaches its elections, which are bound to stir many emotions among all people connected to the country.
The atmosphere across the country has been growing increasingly tense it has been reported, and is still setting worse. Worryingly, Christian Aid staff have said that they are expecting attacks to take place.
The passionate letter suggested that the upcoming elections were an “unprecedented opportunity” for the Afghan natives to speak out in one clear voice their intention to rebuild a peaceful nation, and to show that the “significant contribution” in reaching this goal provided by the UK government was welcome.
Tony Blair was also urged to express his firm commitment to ensuring the UK continues to support the country.
