28 October 2009 | How Firm is Your Anchor?
We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.Hebrews 6:19, NIV
Notes
Recently my husband and I spent a few days in Devon where we were able to enjoy some wonderful coastal walks. We passed many little bays and river estuaries where yachts and small fishing boats were moored in the water. Each boat was secured to its mooring which in turn was firmly anchored in the sea bed. As the tide turned or the wind changed direction, the boats would turn to face into whatever was coming at them, and they would bob up and down on the surface of the waves, no matter how rough the sea became.Seeing them made me think of the anchor that we have in Jesus Christ. When our lives are firmly anchored in Him, we can turn to face head on any storms that come our way, and we can also hold firm against every tide of opinion. No matter how rough the circumstances of our lives become, we will be able to ride waves of difficulty and adversity and not be overcome by them. Hope in Jesus Christ is an anchor that will never fail or disappoint us. He is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8), and He will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).
However, although Jesus has promised never to leave us, sometimes we stray from Him. We do this when we sin, or when we forget about Him and go our own way. Why not make sure that there is nothing that has caused you to wander away from Jesus today? Then you can be sure that you have an anchor that will hold you firm and secure whatever happens.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank you that hope in You is like having an anchor, firm and secure. Forgive me for the times I have wandered away from You and have not been anchored in You. Help me to hold firmly to You at all times. Amen.Today's Writer
