10 September 2008 | Psalm 27:4

I ask only one thing from the Lord. This is what I want: let me live in the Lord's house all my life. Let me see the Lord's beauty and look with my own eyes at his Temple.

Notes

I worked in a parish in Cleethorpes between 2002 -2005. Death seemed to be part of everyday life, people died from accidents, from medical conditions or as part of their natural ending. One occasion sticks out in my mind. Jonathan was in his 60's and had experienced three open heart surgeries; he had been waiting for a new heart for a number of years. He was realising that without a new heart his life would soon be over.

One of his sons, Terry, was involved in a car accident, the family gathered at his bedside and sat helplessly as he slowly faded away. By the end of the week the doctors informed the family that Terry was brain dead. A big decision lay ahead, for Terry had signed an Organ Donor Card, it was his wish that in his death, his body would give life to others.

Very quickly the doctors went about their task of removing his organs. It became apparent that Terry's hear was compatible with his father. The doctors operated quickly and transplanted Terry's heart into Jonathan. We stood waiting to hear the news, nerves on end, praying together and silently. The consultant came to tell us it had worked, over the next few weeks it was a struggle for Jonathan, but he made it.

Later that year we held a memorial service for Terry at the Church. The doctor at the hospital managed to find others who had been recipients of Terry's organs, and they and their families were invited. During the service I preached on Psalm 27. As people were leaving, Jonathan came up to me and with tears in his eyes said "Terry must be the happiest Angel with God in Heaven".

I have never forgotten those words or what I have since learnt from them, namely, that part of living my life for Christ is about me trying to be selfless, and in doing so I might help others to do the same. For me to be selfless, enables good to overcome evil. It helps me to feel, in a sense that I am in the house of the Lord, and feeling his reflection upon my face.

Prayer

Almighty God, by your Grace, sustain and strengthen me in my faith to such a level that I can live my life in a selfless manner. And that in doing so, I may experience your glory and power in my life. Amen
