5 September 2008 | 1 Timothy 2:1-7

First, I tell you to pray for all people, asking God for what they need and being thankful to him. Pray for rulers and for all who have authority so that we can have quiet and peaceful lives full of worship and respect for God. This is good, and it pleases God our Saviour, who wants all people to be saved and to know the truth. There is one God and one mediator so that human beings can reach God. That way is through Christ Jesus, who is himself human. He gave himself as a payment to free all people. He is proof that came at the right time. That is why I was chosen to tell the Good News and to be an apostle. (I am telling the truth; I am not lying.) I was chosen to teach those who are not Jews to believe and to know the truth.

Notes

Today we are reminded about the importance of prayer. Jesus made prayer a priority especially in the garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26v36-46). We are challenged to pray for others, for leaders in authority and in fact for all people.

How is our prayer life going? Have we prayed in the last 24 hours? How do we pray? What is our style of prayer?

It is very easy to think that all prayer should be with eyes closed, hands together and in silence - this is not the only way of praying. All of our life should be a prayer. We can talk to God at any time - in any place - in many ways. Prayer should encompass our whole lives with God and we may need to try different ways of praying and listening to God to find our preferred style.

Today, let's pray for the leaders of our government. Asking God to give them discernment and wisdom in the decisions that they have to make. Let's ask God to bless them in their public and personal lives and let's pray that God will be ruler over all our lives, our community and our nation.

Prayer

Lord God, Thank you for the gift of prayer. We ask that you will help us to pray. Please give us a hunger for prayer - for talking to you. Today we pray especially for the leaders of our country. Please give them wisdom in the decisions that they have to make and help them to lead our country wisely. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
