3 September 2008 | 1 Timothy 1:12-17

I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who gave me strength, because he trusted me and gave me this work of serving him. In the past I spoke against Christ and persecuted him and did all kinds of things to hurt him. But God showed me mercy, because I did not know what I was doing. I did not believe. But the grace of our Lord was fully given to me, and with that grace came the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

What I say is true, and you should fully accept it: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the worst. But I was given mercy so that in me, the worst of all sinners, Christ Jesus could show that he has patience without limit. His patience with me made me an example for those who would believe in him and have life forever. To the King that rules forever, who will never die, who cannot be seen, the only God, be honour and glory forever and ever. Amen.

Notes

Today's reading reminds us of where Paul (the author of this letter) started - as Saul the persecutor of Christians. Saul wasn't a lost cause; God saw his potential, helped him change and changed his name to Paul.

Is there anyone in our lives that we find hard to believe that they could change? Do we have problems changing the habits that we don't like in ourselves? God is willing to "give us a hand" to change. We can't always do it in our own strength and God won't think anything less of us if we ask for help.

God has called us to serve him in many ways. He wants to be involved in our lives and the best way for us to find out what ministry he is calling us into is to ask him. He may speak to us through the Bible, through people, through feelings or other people's stories. The main thing is that we keep an open mind and are actively listening to his voice.

If we find that we have friends or colleagues who we find difficult to be around (like many people found Saul to be). Let us ask God to help us show them his love and pray that they may meet Jesus in the same way that Saul did.

Prayer

Dear Jesus, thank you that you have called us to follow you. Please help us to be your representatives with the people that we come into contact with today. We ask that you will continue to change us into the people that you want us to be. Please help us, because we cannot do this on our own. Amen.
