But we know that the law is good if someone uses it lawfully. We also know that the law is not made for good people but for those who are against the law and for those who refuse to follow it. It is for people who are against God and are sinful, who are unholy and ungodly, who kill their fathers and mothers, who murder, who take part in sexual sins, who have sexual relations with people of the same sex, who sell slaves, who tell lies, who speak falsely, and who do anything against the true teaching of God. That teaching is part of the Good News of the blessed God that he gave me to tell.

Notes

Have you ever tried to play a game when everyone has their own rules? The result would be disastrous. Rules are needed so that the game is fair and for all to get enjoyment out of the exercise. Children have a tendency to push against any rules that their parents set, but take away the rules and they are lost. They need structure and limits to live. God also knows that this applies to us. We need a set of rules to live by. The rules that we have are the Ten Commandments in the Old Testament of the Bible. These help us to see what God's standards are for living. They help us to live in community with other people and flourish in our relationships. Jesus simplified these original rules when he said to the crowds around that there were just two rules - we should love God first and also love our neighbour. All of the original commandments can be fitted into these two.

If we keep to these rules, we will be God and people centred and not self centred. Seeing the needs of others before our own. This is the ultimate challenge in the self centred society that we can find ourselves living in today.

Prayer

Dear God, we thank you for rules - for a guide to living well. Please help us to follow your rules for living and to be tolerant of ourselves and others when we get things wrong. Please give us the strength to live your way. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
