1 September 2008 | 1 Timothy 1:1-7

From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus, by the command of God our Saviour and Christ Jesus our hope.
To Timothy, a true child to me because you believe:
Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

I asked you to stay longer in Ephesus when I went into Macedonia so you could command some people there to stop teaching false things. Tell them not to spend their time on stories that are not true and on long lists of names in family histories. These things only bring arguments; they do not help God's work, which is done in faith. The purpose of this command is for people to have love, a love that comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a true faith. Some people have missed these things and turned to useless talk. They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not understand either what they are talking about or what they are sure about.

Notes

Have you ever had to stand your ground in a debate with someone much older than you? Paul is writing to Timothy who is thought to be in his 20's. Paul encourages Timothy and also us to stand up for what we believe. It is our belief in God that matters and not how old we are, our spiritual maturity is what matters. Stay true to the faith, stand up for what you believe, but most importantly - do this because of love. The type of love that oozes out of every pore, through our relationship with God and our relationships with others around us. We are to be "God with clothes on" to the people around us. People should be able to know that we are Christians by how we act as well as what we say. Jesus is our ultimate example - he loved us so much that he was willing to lay down his life for us and die. How far would we go for someone else? Would we be willing to lay down our lives for someone if Jesus asked us to?

Our challenge today is to show our love for God by how we treat people around us. This includes the people we find it hard to like.

Prayer

Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for loving us so much that you were willing to die for us. Please help us today to show your love to others. We ask especially for the grace to love our enemies and people whom we find it hard to love. Amen.
