29 March 2008 | Psalm 75:1-5
God, we thank you; we thank you because you are near. We tell about the miracles you do.You say, "I set the time for trial, and I will judge fairly.
The earth with all its people may shake, but I am the one who holds it steady.
I say to those who are proud, 'Don't brag,' and to the wicked, 'Don't show your power.
Don't try to use your power against heaven.
Don't be stubborn.' "
Notes
Miracles are often greeted with cynicism by "those who are proud". When you travel to somewhere like Rwanda and see first hand a poor family praying in the early hours to God that they will find food or protection from harm that day and then celebrating in the evening, it tends to make you acknowledge the every day "miracles" we tend to take for granted here in the UK. Poor people often have a habit of not only sharing the little they have but, if they know God, also what He has done for them with anyone who will listen. They know that if a human has provided something, God was the one who put into their heart to provide it.Do we, with the amount of "stuff" we have also thank God? Do we recognise that it isn't our purchasing power that gets us that iPod but our being healthy enough to earn the money? And who provides good health? We have even more cause to be thankful and if we are humble enough we will discover that simply speaking about God's goodness increases our faith levels. Try it! It's not hard to drop something positive into a conversation. If someone is moaning about the weather, see what happens when you tell them you're thankful we have the fantastic variety of the seasons!
Prayer
God, today I want you to know that I am grateful for (the things I have). Thank you. Empower me to show a bit of heaven to others. Amen.Written by Hil Jennings
