28 March 2008 | John 20:30-31

Jesus did many other miracles in the presence of his followers that are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Then, by believing, you may have life through his name.

Notes

Those miracles "not written" make you wonder what else! I get the sense of John saying, "I could go on for ever but if the miracles I've reported aren't enough to convince you, there's no point in wasting my time and effort as you've already decided not to believe". The thing is, since this was written the list of unwritten miracles continues to this day. Terminally ill patients dumbfounding doctors with major recovery, persecuted Christians rescued from certain death situations, heavenly bodyguards surrounding and protecting innocents. It goes on every day somewhere in the world even if Jesus doesn't always get the credit for it.

"These are written so that you may believe". As you read the words I am writing, I am praying they will help build you up. Words are powerful. Genesis describes God breathing our world into existence by speaking. "In the beginning was the WORD" says John's gospel. A Roman officer knew that one word from Jesus and his servant would be made well. (Matthew 8 v. 8)

Do you need a miracle? Perhaps a "YES!" from God? God has lots to tell you too!

Prayer

Jesus, your words are for my benefit. Speak into every area of my life and may the life you give me translate into life-giving words for others. Amen
