Yahweh - Hillsong in all its acoustic glory

4 out 5

You’re probably thinking ‘not another Hillsong album’, right? Well, yes it is and from my perspective at least, that’s not a bad thing.

Hillsong seems to be on a never ending roll of doing what it does best – God-centred worship that's filled with awe and wonder. Get ready to put your hands up to the sky because Yahweh follows this tradition.

Now. before we get too exited, there are 13 worship songs on Yahweh, all taken from previous albums so we know them all very well already. But the good thing is that they are all great songs that I – and clearly they – have yet to tire of. ‘Time Has Come’, ‘From the Inside Out’ and ‘Came to the Rescue’ are all here in acoustic glory.

And that’s the whole point of Yahweh. If there’s one thing Hillsong has made an art form of, it’s adrenalin-pumping, rocking worship on an arena-filling scale. But this album lands at the other end of the spectrum - acoustic, contemplative, organic worship.

It’s certainly a welcome addition to the Hillsong music family - Hillsong all the way, but just more mellowed out, a very much softer approach to the music we know and love. There are also some nice new arrangements to boot.

But take out all the banging drums and electric guitars of their previous albums – which we still love, of course – and you've got Yahweh. So just kick back, reflect and take your time to listen to the lyrics. This is ideal stuff to spend some time with God to. May Hillsong’s acoustic endeavours continue.

Yahweh also comes with a DVD package with live recordings and a Deluxe edition on iTunes
