The Xbox Scorpio and PlayStation 4 Neo are the next-generation video game consoles that will soon join the entertainment arsenal of many people. Both are said to bring in 4K and VR (virtual reality) capabilities.

The two upcoming consoles are capable of rendering 4K videos and will have the ability to play 4K Blu-rays. A 4K TV is required to maximize this feature.  These will be powerful enough to drive VR headsets, such as the PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift. This is optional, but will definitely bring another level of gaming experience.

Hardware-wise, Microsoft has not disclosed any technical specifications of the Xbox Scorpio, but the company announced during the recently concluded Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2016, that it can produce up to 6 Teraflops of compute power. Industry experts put it at 40 percent faster than Sony's upcoming offering, Alphr reported.

Gaming Bolt added that the GPU for the device will be provided by AMD, equipped with its upcoming Vega architecture. This, again, puts the Microsoft device to be more powerful than its counterpart.

However, the publication noted that even if the two major components are said to be better than those of the other console, this does not necessarily mean that it is better. These are all in paper and only when the actual units arrive that a real comparison can be made.

Meanwhile, the PlayStation Neo has been tipped by multiple sources to be carrying 8 CPU cores, the same as the Scorpio, but with lesser memory bandwidth, at 218 GB/s. Given the value, experts on the matter expect that the device will be able to deliver up to 4.14 Teraflops compute power. The CPU was mentioned to be a variant of AMD's Jaguar cores running at 2.1 GHz clock speed.

For its GPU, it was  reported that a downclocked version of an AMD Polaris-based video card will be going into the device.

Gamers are already expecting figures with regards to graphic performance, such as frame rate data. Unfortunately, nobody can provide this information this early. Console gamers can expect more news in the months to come.

The PlayStation 4 Neo is expected to be ready sometime this year, while the Xbox Scorpio is said to be released in 2017.
