A woman wearing a burqa, the Muslim attire for women, used an American flag to attack a family in Lawrenceville, Georgia on Wednesday for no apparent reason.

Police have arrested Amina Ahra, 30, for two counts of simple battery for attacking Dami Arno and her daughter at their home, FOX 5 reports.

"A lady walked out of our woods in a full burqa, full attire, stares at us for a minute, then grabs my American flag off my mailbox and charges towards us with it, just swinging it with all her might," Arno recalled.

Her daughter, Brittany, said when the women charged, "it was kinda like momma bear instincts kicked in. She had to protect her children."

"As soon as she realised mommy was fighting for her life, my daughter was right by my side trying to stop her," Arno said, 11Alive Atlanta reports.

The attack lasted for several minutes. At one point, Ahra took off her shoe and used it to attack others.

Arno said she suffered a swollen knuckle and bruises.

Her 14-year-old son grabbed a gun from the house and was ready to use it as defence.

"That did not even fazed her. It didn't stop her; it didn't do anything," Arno said.

One witness helped to hold down Ahra until police arrived.

"We fought for probably seven minutes until the police arrived here because I wasn't letting her go. I did not know what else she would do," she said.

Arno said she could not believe that this had happened on her property.

"What in the world is going on here? Why am I not safe on my own property. Why can I not sit in my garage and not feel like I'm going to be attacked by someone walking down my street with my American flag," she said.

She said Ahra never said a word and by the look in her eyes, her neighbours asked if she had been brainwashed.

"Crazy, that's all, that's the only way I can explain it," Arno said.
