NYC public schools OPEN tomorrow Jan. 22: Schools not closed, update issued by DOE Chancellor Fariña

The DOE website states: 

"Student After-school Programs, Field Trips, and PSAL Games are Operating on a Normal Schedule

Chancellor Carmen Fariña today announced that schools will be open tomorrow, and all student after-school programs and PSAL games will resume their normal schedules. Travel conditions may be difficult, and families should exercise their own judgment when taking their children to school. Families of students with disabilities who have transportation concerns can call 718-392-8855 for assistance starting at 5:30 am."

Winter storm warnings have been issued in New Jersey and New York City from noon Tuesday, Jan. 21 to 6 a.m. Wednesday.

With up to 12 inches of snowfall expected overnight and wind gusts of up to 35mph, residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid travel when possible.

The New York City Sanitation Department has confirmed that snow plows and salt spreaders will be ready for the snow. Residents can check when their streets will be plowed here: maps.nyc.gov/snow.

No express subways will be in service after the evening rush hour, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

So far, the Staten Island Ferry and the Long Island Rail Road are operating as normal but that could be subject to change.

UPDATE: Over 3,200 flights cancelled across the U.S. 

Some 309 schools have been cancelled, with early dismissals in place at hundreds of schools in both New Jersey and New York City.

The New York City Department of Education has not yet announced the cancellation of public schools.

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that parents and students should assume that school will be open tomorrow and that officials will reassess the day as it progresses.

Earlier today, NYC DOE Chancellor Carmen Farina announced the cancellation of afterschool programs today.

The NYC DOE website states: "Due to anticipated inclement weather conditions, afterschool programs and PSAL activities are cancelled today, Tuesday, January 21, 2014. No other changes to the school schedule are being made at this time. Since severe cold weather and snow are expected to make roads slippery, we urge New Yorkers to exercise caution when traveling to and from schools. Safety is a top priority for the Department."

Parents are urged to check the Department of Education website for further updates on school cancellations tomorrow.

Earlier this year, all public schools were cancelled on Jan. 3 due to blizzard-like conditions brought on by Storm Hercules.
