Mystic Falls will be faced with big changes when "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 begins. Elena was ordained a saddening fate by the end of season 6 and she'll be in a deep slumber for awhile. The lives of the people she loves and who loves her will go on, although not in the way they once did when she was around.

The impact of the loss on Damon is so great that he is ready to return to his old uncaring self, the one fans saw in the first seasons of the series. However, in this dark phase of his life, Damon won't be alone. Executive producer Caroline Dries revealed that Alaric will be by his side all throughout.

"He's going to rest on Damon's shoulder, and we're going to find them growing up together in the premiere," Dries told TV Line.

However, while Damon will be accompanied by a loyal friend, it will be his own bloodline who'd go to the ends of the Earth to see him suffer. Reports are suggesting that Damon's mom and the members of the vampire family will be the new baddies in town and the complications will extend to worse things such as Enzo being compelled to choose between the person who took him in as family and a friend who showed him the meaning of loyalty.

While this transpires, Damon will also get to strengthen his friendship with Bonnie. Fans believe that "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 may open up to a possible romance although it was already established that Damon will focus on mending his wounds and his friendships than looking out for a new lady to love. Dries, however, said that without Elena, Bonnie will become Damon's "moral center."

Interestingly, actress Nina Dobrev's exit from the hit supernatural series courted new rumors, this time involving the possible exit of Paul Wesley, who plays Damon's brother Stefan. Talking to People during The Humane Society of the United States Los Angeles Gala, the actor admitted that "everything must come to an end."

"First of all I'm playing a 17-year-old. I'm 32 years old. So theoretically, if I were to stay on the show for say three more years, I would be a 35 year old playing a 17-year-old, which is almost double. It's more than double. It's literally more than double," the actor said.

While his exit, if it were to happen, is not in the offing, it is still something that worries fans who are left to wonder what's left of the series. Should Wesley follow Dobrev on the way out, it won't be in the upcoming season. With the Salvatore patriarch as the possible new adversary, Stefan has to get involved.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 7 will premiere this fall.
