A British soldier was killed and five others injured when their vehicle was hit by a mine in southern Afghanistan on Sunday, the Ministry of Defence said on Monday.

The MoD said the dead soldier was attached to the 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.

"The casualties were evacuated by helicopter to the ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) medical facility at Camp Bastion and Kandahar airfield. Sadly one of the soldiers was pronounced dead at the scene," it said in a statement.

Britain has around 7,800 troops in Afghanistan as part of the 40,000-strong NATO stabilisation force.
