Two servicemen from the RAF Regiment have died in a roadside blast in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said on Monday.

Two other servicemen were hurt, but their injuries were described as not life-threatening.

The men were carrying out a routine patrol about 1.2 miles west of Kandahar Airfield at 6:48 p.m. local time on Sunday when their vehicle drove over the explosive device.

"Medical care was given at the scene and all four servicemen were evacuated to the field hospital at Kandahar Airfield," the MoD said in a statement.

"Sadly, despite the best efforts of the medical team, two of the servicemen died as a result of their wounds."

Next of kin have been informed.

The number of UK military deaths in Afghanistan since the Taliban government was toppled in 2001 is now 93.
