The inhabitants of Alexandria brace for a bloody war with the undead in the upcoming season of the AMC series "The Walking Dead."

Screencrush reports that after multiple threats that shattered the town's safety, the citizens are left with no choice but to gear up for an all-out battle with the walkers. Gone are the days when they hide weapons in the Alexandria armory. In the promo photos released for the hit zombie apocalypse drama show, even ordinary people are holding guns and weapons while waiting for the zombies to arrive.

At their center is the group of hardened survivors led by Rick (Andrew Lincoln). Having been fighting for their homes and families, combating the undead becomes so much more than survival. This time around, Rick and the gang will defend the people they love most, at any cost, even if it means losing their own lives.

Meanwhile, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, creator and writer Robert Kirkman revealed that season 6 will be veering more toward the comic book than any previous installment.

"All I'll say is that a few of the things coming deal with very cool, very beloved parts of the comic series and expand them in ways that die-hard fans are going to love," Kirkman said.

He explained that although they always reserve the right to stray from the original source, this time around, most of the scenes that viewers will see were lifted right out of the comics. One of the extracts to look forward to is the part where a herd of walkers invade the Alexandria Safe-Zone. This will reportedly lead to the deaths of several characters and the re-emergence of the Wolves.

Kirkman also revealed that the upcoming installment will focus more on Daryl's (Norman Reedus) storyline. In one of the images released by AMC, he could be seen wiping his bloody hands, as if he just finished butchering somebody. Carol (Melissa McBride) will also be playing a big role as Rick's most trusted ally.

"The Walking Dead" will return on Sunday, Oct. 11, at 9 p.m. EST on AMC.
