It has been a while since "The Last of Us" was released for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 consoles, which is why fans are now looking forward to hearing any information about a sequel from game developer Naughty Dog and game publisher Sony Computer Entertainment. But it might not come soon.

Early this year, Naughty Dog's Bruce Straley told Gamespot that they still have no plans for a "Last of Us 2" release because they are still busy working on another project.

"We're 110 percent in Uncharted 4 territory now. Blinders on, make this awesome," Straley said.

Meanwhile, Straley's co-director for the game Neil Druckmann also mentioned that he somehow agrees with some fans who believe that "The Last of Us" should just be a one-off game instead of following it up with a sequel.

"We have brainstormed sequel ideas for The Last of Us, and we've brainstormed ideas for new games, but all of that is put on ice right now while we work on Uncharted 4," the game co-director said.

Some of the rumors claim that the plot of the alleged "Last of Us 2" title may not revolve around the story of Joel and Ellie. Instead, a new character could be introduced if a sequel will be developed.

Another current speculation about the highly anticipated sequel claims that Naughty Dog could consider making a sequel once they are finished with the "Uncharted 4" game, and when the movie adaptation of "The Last of Us" has been released.

Critically acclaimed director Sam Raimi picked up the story of "The Last of Us" and plans to bring it to the big screen soon. Although there is, at the moment, limited information about the game's movie version, speculations claim that "Game of Thrones" star Maisie Williams is in the running to portray the role of Ellie in the film.

If rumors turn out to be true, then the big screen adaptation of "The Last of Us" will be released sometime in 2016.
