'The Last Of Us' movie update: Maisie Williams and Gerard Butler close to signing?

Latest "The Last Of Us" movie rumors name Maisie Williams and Gerard Butler as the actors close to bagging the main roles in the movie.

"Game of Thrones'" Maisie Williams is rumored to star as Ellie, while Gerard Butler will play Joel. In the movie adaptation of the popular PlayStation game, the two protagonists will tread the zombie or "infected" storyline.

However, the competition is not over yet.  Aside from Gerard Butler, Dylan McDermott, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Hugh Jackman, and Josh Brolin are the other frontrunners in playing the role of Joel in the film. Meanwhile, Ellen Page, Elle Fanning, and Chloe Grace Moretz are reportedly tapped to play the role of Ellie.

Game creator Neil Druckmann will also be in charge of the screenplay of the film. He said that they are currently working on the narrative of the film condensing the 15-hour gameplay into a two-hour movie. Thus, there will be a lot of rewriting needed to make the film's script and to ensure that all of the essentials are included in the story.

"I'm in the middle of it now, and it's been super difficult because there's so much that happens in The Last of Us – even just in the cinematics – that can't fit in a film. Let alone all the gameplay in-between and dialogue," Druckmann told IGN.

Druckmann also said that it was hard to leave some things out, but he will develop a narrative focused on the two protagonists with some parts similar to the game, while others could be slightly different.

Director Sam Raimi will take the helm of the game's movie adaptation and he revealed a few details about "The Last Of Us" movie.

"It's gonna be a great character journey, a great love story and great horror fiction," he said at the Comic Con.

As of now, there is no exact release date of the film yet as it is still in the pre-production stage.
