"Switched at Birth" season 5 will be the final installment to the culturally dynamic and family-centered story of Bay Kennish (Vanessa Marano) and Daphne Vasquez (Katie Leclerc). As their story comes to an end, a major tragedy could shake up their lives: someone close to their hearts could die in the show's final season.

Freeform announced last year that "Switched at Birth" will be picked up for a fifth season. Series creator Lizzy Weiss then announced on her Twitter account that the upcoming fifth season will be their final one.

"This season of #SwitchedatBirth will be our final one. We are ending the show after an amazing 103 episodes with pride, love, and gratitude," Weiss wrote on her post.

It is praise-worthy that season 5 of "Switched at Birth" will be including their milestone of airing their 100^th episode. However, reasons for the series' finish have not been confirmed or announced.

So far, season 5 already has episode titles for seven out of 10 episodes, and it was revealed by TV Line that their finale will be 90 minutes long.

It is speculated that in season 5, Bay and Daphne will be saying goodbye to someone close to their hearts. Previously in "Switched at Birth," the girls have settled in after 10 months abroad when they receive a phone call bringing news that will bring them both back home to Kansas.

Rumors point out that the call was made to inform the girls about someone's death, which could have something to do with John Kennish (D.W. Moffett).

In the previous season, John found out that he had a terminal illness. At the same time, he was going through a rough time with his wife — Kathryn (Lea Thompson) — who is now thinking of divorcing him. It is possible that the stress pushes him further into the sickness, causing his death.

"Switched at Birth" season 5 premieres Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at 9 p.m. EDT on Freeform.
