"Star Trek Beyond" will take place during the five-year mission that the original "Star Trek" series focused on. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the cast of the film revealed just how much time has passed since the second film ended and just how far deep the USS Enterprise and its crew have travelled into deep space.

Actor John Cho, who portrays the ship's primary pilot Hikaru Sulu, the crew members of the ship have begun to get on each other's nerves and the ship is now in "ruts." His statements indicate that the crew has been in deep space for some time now and actor Karl Urban, who plays medical chief officer Bones, specifies just how long the team has travelled.

"On this one you'll notice that there's been aging. It's two years into the mission, so there's wear and tear on the ship," Urban explained.

With a two-year time jump following the end of "Star Trek Into Darkness," this means that some of the events from the original television series may have already taken place. However, given that the first reboot film altered the timeline, it is possible that the chronology of events are now different.

As pointed in the report from Cinema Blend, this aspect of the crew being tired and ready to go home was never approached in the original television series due to the fact that it was a serialized show. Fans at the time were not expected to watch each episode, and therefore the status of the characters were not changed from episode to episode.

The interview also reveals that Sulu wants to go home as he hasn't seen his daughter, Demora, in the two years that the crew has been gone. Demora was previously shown as an adult in the film "Star Trek Generations" but it is possible that she will be portrayed as a young child in "Star Trek Beyond."

"Star Trek Beyond" opens in theaters this July 22.
