While the divorce of "Sister Wives" stars Kody and Meri Brown was presented as a mutual decision, it was revealed this week that Meri was the instigator.

Kody had four wives, but was only legally married to his first wife, Meri.

The couple's divorce was finalised last fall in a joint decision, although the public did not find out about the breakup until earlier this month.

"We have chosen to legally restructure our family," a statement from the polygamists read. "We made this decision together as a family. We are grateful to our family, friends and fans for all their love and support."

In a teaser for the two-hour season finale, Meri, 44, shared the news quite differently.

"I am divorcing Kody," she said through tears, according to The Wrap.

A press release from TLC confirmed that there is more to the story.

"In the season finale, additional details emerge that add clarity to Meri's decision to divorce Kody," the statement provided to Us Weekly read, "and the family's decision to take the additional step of Robyn marrying Kody."

Robyn, 36, is Kody's newest wife, whom he legally married several months after the divorce from Meri. TMZ reported that he chose to marry Robyn to become the legal guardian of her three children from a prior relationship.

Kody, 46, has a spiritual union with Janelle, 45, and Christine, 42.

The season finale will be followed by a tell-all hosted by Tamron Hall. The final episode of the fifth season will air on Sunday, March 1, on TLC at 8 p.m. ET.
