There have been rumors of a "Sherlock" spin-off show focusing solely on Irene Adler (Lara Pulver). However, during the "Sherlock" panel at the 2015 San Diego Comic-Con, series creator Steven Moffat explained that Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Adler might never cross paths again. 

The last time fans saw Irene Adler was in season 2 when she was about to be executed in Pakistan but Sherlock Holmes came in to rescue her. She hasn't appeared in the series since, except for a quick cameo in season 3 where she appeared as a part of Sherlock's hallucinations.  

During the panel, as reported by Cinema Blend, Moffat explained to the crowd that he had written what could be considered as a sequel to the events that followed Sherlock's rescue of Adler. According to Moffat, the two continue together but end up getting too many people involved in what Moffat referred to as "essentially a domestic dispute." 

"She ends up stealing all his clothes and running off," he explained. "To be honest, I think they never saw each other again, to tell the truth. But they both smile, once a day, whenever they think of each other." 

The sequence was never put to production and may not even be considered canon by some. It means that there is very little chance of seeing Irene Adler playing a major part in future seasons of "Sherlock." If she is to return, it is more likely to be in her own spin-off, showcasing her own adventures apart from Sherlock and Watson (Martin Freeman). 

"Sherlock" returns with a Christmas special this December but it will be a period piece set in Victorian-era London with a story separate from the main series. As previously reported, season 4 is said to begin production in January 2016 with a premiere expected to be around summer 2016.

Season 4 will focus on Sherlock and Watson as they return to London after what appears to be Moriarty returning from the grave to cause even more trouble.
