It has been 11 years since "Samurai Jack" went off the air and there have been rumblings of a film to finish the series' story for years. However, Adult Swim has now released a teaser trailer that confirms "Samurai Jack" is indeed returning in 2016 and it will be a series instead of a feature film.

According to a report from TVLine, the new series will be featured on Toonami, the sub-block under Cartoon Network and Adult Swim that focuses primarily on Japanese anime, although a few Western cartoons have been featured from time to time. Prominent shows on Toonami include "Dragon Ball Z," "Naruto" and "Attack on Titan."

This will be a bit of a departure given that the original series, which ran from 2001 to 2004, originally aired on the Cartoon Network. This may indicate that the new series will continue to feature more adult-centric themes and action that may no longer be fully appropriate for younger kids without an adult's supervision.

It is also confirmed that series creator Genndy Tartakovsky will be returning as an executive producer. Several months back, Tartakovsky explained in an interview with ComicBook that he felt there was still a story to tell in regard to "Samurai Jack" and this new series may be the opportunity Tartakovsky needs to finish the series properly.

"I feel like it's culminating to a fever pitch almost," he explained at the time. "I feel like it's time to maybe finish the story. We've been trying to get the feature off the ground but maybe that's just fate's way of saying this is a television thing and maybe it should be a mini-series or something like that."

Adult Swim's announcement came with the aforementioned teaser and a new poster. However, it has yet to be confirmed if this is merely a short mini-series to complete the story or if it will be the beginning of a new era of "Samurai Jack" with more seasons to come.
