'Rookie Blue' season 6 spoilers: characters stuck in gray area

Rookie Blue season 6ABC

"Rookie Blue" season 6 might be the show's last run. According to a report from the Latin Post, both ABC Chief Paul Lee and Shaw Media head Barbara Williams have high hopes for the show but the seriers' showrunner, Tassie Cameron, wants to remind fans that the chances of the show getting renewed for season 7 are still up in the air.

"It's great to hear the networks are interested in keeping us around, it's such a vote of confidence and means an awful lot," Cameron explained in the report, but she continued to state that there are still things to consider before moving forward. "There are the actors, and there are contracts. ... I don't know. I think it's still up in the air. It's a conversation we'll be having in the next couple of weeks."

Season 6 already proved troublesome for the networks. Last year, it was announced that season 5 would be cut down in half with the second half premiering as season 6 instead of season 5B. This reduced season 5 to just 11 episodes and now season 6 will only have 11 episodes as well.

Reducing the number of episodes per season and cutting the fifth season in two might be the network's way of going around contract obligations, which Cameron alluded to in her statements. Many of the cast members might have been contracted for two more seasons following season 4 but now that season 5 was split in two, their contracts might be up.

It would cost the networks more money to renew those contracts and make sure that production moves forward for season 7. This hints at the possibility that season 6 will be the end for "Rookie Blue."

It's not just the show sitting in a gray area either. According to the Latin Post report, the characters will also be living in gray areas. Season 5 dove into the crew's past mistakes and now, they'll have to learn to accept those mistakes in order to move forward.
