Robert Pattinson on Kristen Stewart a year after their split: 'It's just young people'

The now-defunct relationship of Twilight Saga co-stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart has always been on the rocks. One writer even describes it as "on-again-off-again." Hence, even after their relationship had been shaken up by Stewart's scandalous photo which shows her kissing Rupert Sanders (director of Snow White and the Huntsman, which stars Stewart), the paparazzi had remained outside Pattinson's home patiently waiting for signs that this tumultuous relationship, which officially ended in May 2013, just might be getting fixed again.

And last November 1, the couple had indeed been spotted together by the patient reporters in Pattinson's Beverly Hills home, where Kristen had apparently spent four hours with the actor, and the couple had been seen trailing each other – he in his silver jeep following her behind her blue Toyota Pickup. But upon realizing that the paparazzi had spotted them, Pattinson drove back home, infuriating Stewart, causing her to flash her middle finger at the reporters.

And finally, after more than a year of silence, Pattinson reacted to all the commotion in an interview for the upcoming September 2014 issue of Esquire UK: "I don't understand why. I think it goes through periods where you're assigned 'this is the guy to follow'. But whenever I see a bunch of paparazzi hanging out, I always think, 'Oh God, what have they found out!' Oh, that love child! I totally forgot!"

With regard to the breakup, the actor also finally opened up: "S*** happens, you know? It's just young people ... it's normal! And honestly, who gives a s***?"

And this attitude might well explain why he has easily jumped into dating with model Dylan Penn (the daughter of Sean Penn and Robin Wright) last September, while Kristen has reportedly stayed single while busy filming the upcoming Sils Maria in Switzerland.

Pattinson's answer to the question of what he has found most difficult about the breakup justifies why it has taken him so long to finally react to the news of their split. "The hardest part was talking about it afterwards," Pattinson added. "Because when you talk about other people, it affects them in ways you can't predict," he said. "It's like that scene in Doubt, where he's talking about how to take back gossip? They throw all those feathers from a pillow into the sky and you've got to go and collect all the feathers."

So what comes out of all of this? Well, despite Stewarts public apology to Pattinson and to Rupert Sander's family for this fiasco, she has still been removed from the newer film's cast, which will now be directed by The Shawshank Redemption director Frank Daramont.

Meanwhile, Pattinson still seems to continue enjoying his celebrity status despite it all, as he recounted fondly, "I remember when it happened. I was going to clubs in L.A. and you had to call the promoters ahead of time to get on the guest list. But one time I forgot to call, and I was on the list anyway. That's when I knew. I showed up with mustard down my T-shirt and they're like giving me the wink, 'Yeah, man, you're on the list.'"
