PS4. 5 (PS4K) release date rumors: Console to be released in December? Microsoft shuts down Xbox One upgrade rumors

PS4.5 is reportedly hitting the stores by the end of the year.Facebook

Sony has chosen to keep its lips tight about the so-called PS4.5 or PS4K, a purported upgrade to the PS4 that supports 4K resolution.

Sony reportedly introduced the PS4.5 (PS4K) behind closed doors to developers a couple of weeks back. But even with the word now out and about, the gaming company has yet to respond to the rumors. Game Industry believes Sony's silence about the matter is "a fairly momentous PR mistake."

The PS4.5 (PS4K) will reportedly be released during the holiday and will cater to an enhanced Virtual Reality experience. Aside from that, the PS4.5 will be identical to the PS4 and will even share the same game library.

With the buzz about a PS4 upgrade dubbed as the PS4.5 or PS4K going wild, some gamers are starting to think that Microsoft should be giving the Xbox One a facelift as well, referring to the unannounced upgrade as Xbox One and a half or Xbox 1.5.

While Microsoft has tons of visions for the Xbox One -- the PS4.5 talks started after the company announced its plans for the console -- taking half a step is not the way to go.

Microsoft Xbox division head Phil Spencer touched on the subject during the Build Developers Conference, where he discussed the Redmond-based company's plans for its flagship console.

"I'm not a big fan of Xbox One and a half. If we're going to move forward, I want to move forward in big numbers," Spencer said, according to Screenrant.

"For us, our box is doing well. It performs, it's reliable. The servers are doing well. If we're going to go forward with anything, like I said, I want it to be a really substantial change for people–an upgrade," he went on to say.

As for the PS4.5 (PS4K), if the device is indeed real, gamers should hear more about it from Sony in the coming months.
