"Outlander" season 2 still has three episodes left but the past 10 installments have fans already looking ahead to season 3 of the hit time travel drama.

Although the second season of "Outlander" is just in the middle of its broadcast, Starz double renewed "Outlander" for season 3 and season 4.

While this certainly is good news to followers of the "Outlander," it may not be for those who watch the show because it closely follows the books by Diana Gabaldon.

In an interview with Bustle, "Outlander" executive producer Ronald D. Moore said that their goal is to be as faithful to the source material as possible, but there's a tendency for the show to wander off as it draws out.

"I think the longer that you go, the more the TV series inevitably veers from the book and certain plot lines then take on a life of their own. Certain characters change and you have to follow the way they change," Moore said.

He pointed out that they have added elements not in the book and changed things up in some characters, which "Outlander" fans, even those who read the book series, seem to chime in with.

Moore explained that these changes are inevitable and will develop as the series progresses. "Certain characters change and you have to follow the way they change... Those changes add up and the further in you go, the bigger those separations become," the EP said.

Nevertheless, "Outlander" season 3 will still be based on the third novel titled "Voyager" in Gabaldon's series and Moore promised that it will be "Epic. It'll just get bigger and bigger."

Moore also teased that even fans of the novels will not be able to predict what the "Outlander" season 2 finale airing July 9 has in store since they included "a storyline that was not in the book" and used it on an established character.

According to producer Matt Roberts, the early renewal of "Outlander" season 3 and 4 will give the cast and crew ample time to put the seasons together.

That being said, fans won't have to wait longer than they did for the current season to see Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Catriona Balfe) back on the small screen.

"Outlander" season 2 airs every Saturday at 9 p.m. ET on Starz.
