Netflix's "Orange is the New Black" is officially more popular than the multiple Emmy-nominated "House of Cards". The success of both original series launched on Netflix is proving that viewers are adapting to the new platform for TV shows. With no commercial interruptions or strict TV schedule to stick by, viewers can watch over a dozen episodes in less than 24 hours.
"Orange is the New Black," a comedy-drama based on the story of Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), an upper-class woman sent to prison and how she adapts to prison life, was launched on July 11, 2013. Within a month, the series proved to be a massive hit, even surprising the cast members.
The show has been dubbed by Washington Post as the "best TV show about prison ever made" as it confronts issues that female inmates face, such as race, class and mental-health issues.
The show has commenced filming for season 2 on July 29 and the premiere date is expected to be some time in 2014.
Pablo Schreiber, who plays George Mendez, a bullying prison guard, recently spoke to Yahoo! about the success of OITNB.
"I think everyone is a little taken by surprise at how big it's become, but everyone's incredibly grateful. We had such a great time shooting the show. And everyone involved with the show is just aces," Schreiber told Yahoo! He continued, "I think there was a lot of doubt. And with Netflix releasing the information that it's been [watched] more times than "House of Cards" and "Arrested Development," I don't think anybody would have expected that going in. So yeah, the passionate fan base that has come out of people being able to binge watch ... I think that's what has taken everyone most by surprise."
Schreiber's trademark mustache for the George Mendex role is now instantly recognizable, and he is given the nickname "Pornstache" on the show. He confirmed that the mustache is actually not real, and described the mustache as "deliciously perfect."
When asked if viewers will see more of his character in season 2, he replied, "I think you can assume you will see him. Beyond that, I can't really speak about what will happen to Pornstache and everybody else."
Orange is the New Black" stars Laura Prepon as Alex Vause (Chapmman's former girlfriend), Michael J. Harney as Sam Healy (prison manager), Michelle Hurst as Miss Claudette (Chapman's former roommate), Kate Mulgrew as Galina 'Red' Reznikov (prison-mate), and Jason Biggs as Larry Bloom (Chapman's fiancé).
Taryn Manning, who plays Tiffnay "Pennsatucky" Doggett, will return for season 2.
Danielle Brooks, who plays Tasha "Taystee" Jefferson, has also been promoted as a series regular for the upcoming season.
A new inmate will also join season 2. Lorraine Toussaint, has signed on to play Vee, "a longtime street tough who ran her own drug business, recruiting children to serve as runners."
Dascha Polanco, who plays Dayanara Diaz, recently spoke with Vulture, and discussed whether she becomes pregnant on season 2. "I don't know! I have to wait for the script, too. I want to know if she's really pregnant or just sick with the flu?"
