NVIDIA GTX 1080 Ti release date news update: GPU that can rival the Titan X's performance rumored to come out in January 2017

Despite NVIDIA's release of several new Pascal-based graphics processing units (GPU), their current generation GeForce GTX Titan X still seems to reign as the most powerful GPU they have ever made. However, new reports have now revealed that the company may be releasing a brand new GPU, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, which will reportedly have the same performance as the GTX Titan X, but with a relatively lower price.

A recently uncovered leak posted on Overclock3D allegedly shows the performance of the upcoming GTX 1080 Ti GPU. According to the leak, the new card seems to have all the right stuff to compete against the Titan X, with a few notable improvements. The technology used with the new 1080 Ti will be the same type of new generation technology that can be found on the vanilla GTX 1080, GTX 1070, and the steeply priced Titan X.

The information provided in the leak has not yet been verified to be authentic, but the details do show that GTX 1080's hardware should be more than sufficient to take on the Titan X's overall capabilities.

There are some differences, of course, between the two, with the 1080 Ti beating some of the numbers on the Titan X, and vice versa. As an example, the GTX 1080 Ti has a higher base and boosted clock speeds, at 1.6 and 1.5 GHz respectively, as compared to the 1.4 and 1.5 GHz on the Titan X. The Titan X also uses the older GDDR5 memory architecture, while the GTX 1080 Ti uses the newer GDDR5X system.

Despite these differences, when it comes to overall computing power, the Titan X outperforms the GTX 1080 Ti by a margin with its 11 teraflops of computing speed compared to 10.8 teraflops by the 1080 Ti. NVIDIA has not yet officially announced the card's release date, but reports have pegged the release to be in January 2017, which could possibly take place during the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES) event.
