A newborn baby was found alive under pieces of asphalt and rubble in Compton City, Los Angeles, on Friday.

Sisters Angelica Blount and Evangelina McCrary were walking when they heard a cry.

"She told me, 'Can you hear the baby crying?'" said Blount, according to CNN and KABC. "And I said, 'I don't know; it might be a cat.' And my sister said, 'No, it's a baby crying.'"

They called 911 for help. Two deputies from the L.A. Sheriff's office found the baby.

The deputies rescued the baby from a crevice. The baby was found wrapped in a blanket and cold to the touch.

They checked the baby's vital signs and called paramedics. She was treated at the scene before she was taken to a hospital and is currently in stable condition.

The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department said the baby was born within the last 36 to 48 hours.

"We do know that if the child had spent the night there in those conditions the baby wouldn't have survived," Sgt. Marvin Jaramilla said.

He added, "There [were] indications that the child was born at a medical facility or at a hospital...because of the blanket."

Once identified, the parents of the baby will face attempted murder and child endangerment charges.

The sheriff's department is asking the public for any information regarding the parents of the baby girl.

It reminded the public about L.A.'s Baby Safe Surrender Programme where parents in a difficult situation can surrender their baby to any hospital or fire station in L.A., no questions asked.

"Some parents of newborns can find themselves in difficult circumstances. Sadly, babies are sometimes harmed or abandoned by parents who feel that they're not ready or able to raise a child, or don't know there are other options. Many of these mothers or fathers are afraid and don't know where to turn for help," the sheriffs' department said.
