Microsoft Lumia 940 and Lumia 940 XL release date, specs rumors

Microsoft has been concentrating its focus on the middle and entry-level smartphone markets with handsets such as Lumia 640, Lumia 640 XL, Lumia 430 and Lumia 530. However, the software giant might be shifting a portion of that focus to target the higher-tier smartphone market with a flagship pair that is rumored to being called Lumia 940 and Lumia 940 XL.

According to Latino Post, both Lumia 940 and Lumia 940 XL are expected to supersede the company's current flagship smartphone, Lumia 930. Coming to the hardware specifications of both handsets, Lumia 940 and Lumia 940 XL will most likely be running Windows 10 'out of the box'. According to Windows Central, a Windows 10 exclusive feature called Continuum will allow smartphone owners to control their desktop and laptop computers through their mobile devices.

However, a majority of middle and entry-level smartphones which will imminently receive the operating system upgrade, will not be able to take advantage of that feature due to lack of powerful hardware. It is possible that with Lumia 940 and Lumia 940 XL, the barrier is lifted, allowing users to control their computers from their mobile devices. Given below are the expected hardware specifications of Lumia 940 and Lumia 940 XL.

Lumia 940

  • Screen size and resolution: 5.2 inches and 1440p display
  • RAM: 3 GB
  • Chipset: Qualcomm Snapdragon 808
  • Camera: 25 MP rear/8 MP front
  • Battery: 3,000 mAh
  • Internal memory: 32 GB (expandable to 128 GB via microSD card)

Lumia 940 XL

  • RAM: 3 GB
  • Chipset: Qualcomm Snapdragon 810
  • Camera: 25 MP rear/8 MP front
  • Battery: 3,500 mAh
  • Internal memory: 32 GB (expandable to 128 GB via microSD card)

Since Windows 10 is going to be released this summer for desktop platforms and later on for smartphones, it is expected that the flagship duo will most likely be announced in September.
