Prior to their victory in the Gold Cup, Mexico had endured a torrid 12 months where they consistently played below par and looked to be struggling in all departments. Confidence was at a low, and the team seemed not to be gelling together at all.

However, after entering the Gold Cup as a team no one believed would win, they surprised everyone by going all the way, demolishing Jamaica in the final to claim the title.

That helped them put their Copa America disaster behind them, and they now will be looking to continue their progress and build more confidence going forwards.

Efforts to move on towards a brighter future have already had their troubles, with manager Miguel Herrera attacking a journalist at the airport the morning after their win. He was very publicly fired in the aftermath of that incident, and that has left the team with a big question mark and uncertainty over them again.

Mexico have no time to rebuild again, and must immediately begin to build themselves again, as they have a vital Confederations Cup qualifying playoff against the USA coming up in October, and they must be at their best if they are to overcome their old foe.

Trinidad & Tobago will provide a stern test for the Mexico tonight. They performed much better than most expected in the Gold Cup, going as far as the quarter finals before losing out to Panama in the heartbreak of a penalty shootout.

Trinidad have a quick team, who are also aggressive in defense, and that means Mexico must turn up and put in a good performance today or they could rewind things back to their lackluster performances of earlier this year with confidence quickly fleeting.
