Men, it's Time to Stop Believing We Are 'Just Human and Prone to Lust' – Here's How

When we fail at something or commit sin, we often say that "we're only human." Because of this mindset, we've come to accept wrong beliefs as part of who we are, sadly living a lie. Because of this, many live defeated lives characterised by the inability to overcome sin.

Both men and women have their own issues, but I'd like to focus on the men for this article. Usually, men often say that they are predisposed to sexually lust after beautiful women. When you ask a man who fell to sin why it happened, chances are he'll respond with, "I'm a man and I can't help it." This belief is just plain wrong.

You Can Break Free

The Bible gives us various reasons why we should realise that this kind of thinking is a lie, and therefore we can overcome it. Here are some of the reasons we can overcome it.

1. God Created You With Sexual Desires – But Not With Lust

When God made man and woman in the Garden of Eden, He created them to have this natural desire for each other. These sexual desires are holy in nature, and have been given for some purposes.

First, there's the purpose of praise. When Adam saw Eve, he praised the Lord through enjoying His wife, whom God gave Him.

Second, there's the purpose of filling the earth. God commanded them to multiply, and can only do so through having children.

Third, for the man to be focused on his wife alone. God meant marriages to be between a man and a woman, with no third parties. It's God's natural design for a man to long for his wife, not for another. Hopefully this explains why God took only one rib from Adam.

It was sin who created lust in us. But because Christ broke sin's power, it has no power over us anymore.

2. God Made You Into a New Creation in Christ

The Bible says that when we become born-again in Christ, we are made into a new creation. This new creation is totally new, meaning, who we are before Christ is totally gone, and who we are in Him has no trace of that old person.

This simply means that if you were prone to sexual lust before you met Christ, you shouldn't be now that you are in Him. God has forgiven you, taken your sin away from you, has replaced your heart of stone with a heart of flesh, and has deposited His Spirit in you. You're not who you used to be.

In fact, it's not you living in you anymore. You've died with Christ in baptism, and risen with Him in His resurrection. He lives in you now!

3. God Owns You Now, and Sin Cannot Command You

The Bible also says that Christ purchased us with His own blood, and therefore now He owns us. We were taken away from slavery to sin, and were transferred from the kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of Jesus Christ. He is our Master, and we are under no obligation to fulfill the desires of the flesh, including sexual lust.

Sin doesn't own you now. God is your Owner, Christ is your Master, and the Holy Spirit is God living inside of you. We might be tempted to say "we're only human," but we are more than that: We are the temple of the Holy Spirit, who is God Himself. He will help us fight temptations and enable us to overcome.
