Mars Hill church Pastor Dave Bruskas discusses the three areas men struggle with because of their fathers [VIDEO]
Mars Hill Church pastors Mark Driscoll and Dave Bruskas sat down to talk about the importance of fathers last week in promotion of Pastor Dave's recently released book, "Dear Son: A Father's Advice on Being a Man."
He and Pastor Mark discussed the emotional, financial, and relationship lessons that fathers can teach their sons, but that too many men miss out on.
"What are you seeing with young men—things that get them in trouble, get them off-course... that they really need some fatherly counsel, wisdom, to help them correct and direct them?" Seattle megachurch Pastor Mark Driscoll asked.
"I really see the same things over and over again," Pastor Dave began.
"Many of them missed out – even if they had a dad... they missed that affectionate, fatherly relationship.
"A lot of times, where I see the shortcomings manifested are in the three big categories of money, sex, and power, if you will.
"A lot of dads have not prepared their boys to go out into a world where you have, at least in our current economy, a shrinking number of jobs that will allow a man to provide for his family.
"Sex... and relationships, is just an area that's just so askew," he continued.
"A lot of young men struggle with pornography, a lot of them don't know how to appropriately, assertively pursue a woman.
"And then power... Power looks to them like independence. They don't know seem to know how to handle independence in constructive ways.
"God created us to be a part of a family. God looked at Adam and said, 'It's not good for man to be alone.' And marriage comes out of that, but so also does community and family."
Pastor Dave is an executive elder at Mars Hill Church, and pastor of City on a Hill in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
In "Dear Son," Pastor Dave gives advice to men on a range of subjects: first dates, the workplace, weddings, and more. The book is available in physical and digital retailers, including Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and in Mars Hill Church's Resurgence Store.
