Findings from a new survey released today by Help the Aged reveal that nearly half of Londoners (45%) have voted Silent Night as their favourite Christmas carol of all time.
The findings mark the 5th year of the Charity’s ‘A Star for Christmas’ carol concert which takes place on Wednesday 5 December in St Paul’s Church, Covent Garden.
A variety of Christmas carols were selected as part of the survey and Away in a Manger and In the Bleak Midwinter came a joint second, voted for collectively by 18% of Londoners.
However, Silent Night proved to be the most popular by far and so will be performed by classical musician Nicky Spence at the concert, amongst others.
Lionel Blair, who is attending this year’s event, said: “It’s no surprise that Silent Night topped the Help the Aged Christmas poll as it’s such a lovely carol. Londoners will have the opportunity to hear the carol at the ‘A Star for Christmas’ event which is the perfect way to embrace the Christmas spirit!"
A host of well-known celebrities will be joining Lionel at this year’s event, including Compere Penny Smith, Concert Director Sylvia Syms, June Whitfield, Liz Smith and Jamie Glover (star of Waterloo Road).
Readings will be conducted by stars from the Help the Aged Stage for Age Committee, the charity’s celebrity fundraising arm, and there will be music led by the world-famous RADA Choir at the famous Actor’s Church.
Money raised from the event, sponsored by Golden Charter, will go towards funding vital Help the Aged services, including the SeniorMobility service which provides transport to ensure isolated older people can get out to everyday places like day centres and shops.
