Kanye West says 'So Help Me God' is 'gospel album' but with a lot of cursing

Kanye West says his eighth studio album is about 'Mary Magdalene becoming Mary.'Reuters

Controversial rapper Kanye West is contemplating whether to name his eighth studio album "So Help Me God" or "Swish." And while the title of the album indicates that West is now making gospel music, the album is filled with songs that carry curse words.

However, according to West, "So Help Me God" is still a gospel album, and this is exactly what he talked about with his good friend and Christian singer Kirk Franklin.

"When I was sitting in the studio with Kirk, Kirk Franklin, and we're just going through it, I said this is a gospel album, with a whole lot of cursing on it, but it's still a gospel album," West said during an interview with Big Boy Radio. "The gospel according to Ye. It's not exactly what happened in the Bible, but it's this story idea of Mary Magdalene becoming Mary."

West even said that he received a lot of help from God, his late mother Donda West, and his wife Kim Kardashian's late father Robert Kardashian Sr. in the creation of the album.

"I'm only doing one percent, two percent of the work and God is doing the rest of the work. My mom... had Teddy Riley change his flight and come back to the studio," West revealed. "Robert Kardashian is making sure that all the deal's getting done. He's still doing deals for controversial black people from up in Heaven."

Meanwhile, when Kardashian asked on Twitter whether fans preferred the title "So Help Me God" or "Swish," they received a total of 439,102 votes, with 46 percent of them preferring the latter while only 24 percent liked the latter. Around 24 percent of the voters answered that they wanted the name "Waves."
