Kanye West was reportedly taken to UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, California on Monday for psychiatric evaluation after allegedly "acting erratically," a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman told PEOPLE.

Other sources said the 39-year-old Grammy Award winner was hospitalised due to "exhaustion" and "sleep deprivation."

West's wife Kim Kardashian was reportedly seen flying out of New York bound for Los Angeles as soon as news broke of West's hospitalisation on Monday evening.

"Of course he's getting the support that he needs right now," a source close to West told PEOPLE. "Family and friends are around. Kim is being amazing. As are all of his friends and team and inner circle."

Kim, 36, was in New York to attend the Angel Ball, which would have been her first public appearance since she was held at gunpoint, tied up, gagged and robbed of millions of dollars of jewellery on Oct. 3 in her Paris apartment by men disguised as police officers.

One source said what happened to Kim played a role in his reported breakdown. "All those things contribute to his stress level, exhaustion and lack of sleep," the source said.

Another source said the hip-hop superstar has allegedly been "dealing with sleep deprivation" due to his busy schedule, claiming that he was "totally wiped out" from his Saint Pablo tour.

Moreover, another source close to West told PEOPLE that this month of November brings the singer "a lot of pain" since it marked the ninth death anniversary of his mother, Donda. "His mother died in November, so this time of year always brings him a lot of pain. He keeps that pain internalised, but sometimes will talk about how hard this time of year is for him. He works through the pain every November," the source said.

Last year, in an interview with Q Magazine, West appeared to blame himself for his mother's death. "If I had never moved to L.A., she'd be alive. I don't want to go far into it because it will bring me to tears," he was quoted as saying.

News of West's hospitalisation followed a bizarre weekend, including his rants endorsing President-elect Donald Trump, calling out Beyonce and Jay Z, cutting a concert short and cancelling the remainder of his Saint Pablo Tour, according to Billboard.

West's fans began tagging social media posts with the hashtag #PrayForKanye, The Daily Mail reported.

Messages of sympathy and well-wishes poured in on Twitter with the hashtag, with numerous fans saying the singer has had a personal influence on their lives through his art.

"Kanye being hospitalized really ruined my day. Dude's music and interviews have influenced me more than anything," @SimplyPutzke wrote.

Some still sounded optimistic with @fridayfixmusic saying, "Aye @kanyewest is still the man in my book. He'll get through this and come out brighter. He's done it before."
