iPhone 7 release date, specs rumors: New iPhone to feature 12MP Super-HD camera?

To date, Apple has opted to lay off the rising megapixel count that its rival smartphone manufacturing companies have been adding to their new mobile phone variants but all that could change soon.

This is if rumors that the iPhone 7 will come out with a big bump to its featured phone camera, something that may be around 12MP.

If so, this would be a huge hop from the previous 8MP. If you look at the market these days, we see brands like the Sony Xperia Z4 which boasts of a 20.7 MP camera. The Samsung Galaxy S6 has a slightly lower MP count at 16MP and overall, Apple is severely lacking behind in this department - although as most camera experts will tell you, megapixels only count for so much, and there are various other factors that will determine how good a camera actually is, and often Apple has chosen to focus on other factors than the easy-to-market megapixel figure.

However, with its upcoming iPhone 7, said to be due for a release in September 2015, there is a chance that the big disparity in megapixels could be narrowed down a bit.

It is believed that the iPhone 7 will come armed with a 12MP camera. This will be a big jump from the current 8MP shooter that the iPhone 6 carries.

But there could be a catch tied up with this rumor. The megapixels may be larger in total number, but smaller at the same time. Some critics have said that this may eventually result in poorly captured images particularly in low-lit areas.

This could all be negated if one of Apple's newly acquired companies enters the mix. This has something to do with LinX, a recently acquired company which specializes in tiny camera modules for better quality pictures.

This could address the low lighting issue tied up with the believed 12MP camera, a sigh of relief perhaps who love to take photos and are planning to get the yet-to-be released iPhone 7.

The big bump in MP is good news though for those who consider the megapixels as the most important quality of a camera it is still a far cry from what other phones have to offer, and again, the megapixel count only contributes so much - what else is under the hood can have a massive affect on the camera. But with regards to MPs, the good thing is that Apple looks like it will narrow the gap somewhat though expect Samsung and Sony to offer higher resolution and pixel count cameras with their next batch of device successors.
