It did not take long before Marvel announced "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2." In fact, the entertainment giant decided on the sequel even before the first film hit the cinemas. Now that's called confidence.

Fans all know by now that Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista are set to reprise their roles as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Gamora and Drax the Destroyer, respectively. Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper will likewise return for the sequel to lend their voices to Groot and Rocket, respectively.

Plot-wise, not much is known about the sequel, but Peter's father is something director James Gunn would like to feature. He has said, however, that Peter's father will not be J'son of Spartax like in the comics, Empire relays.

So who could Peter's father be? And more importantly, who will be playing him?

Variety reports that veteran actor Kurt Russell is being considered for the role and he is reportedly already in talks with Marvel.

As for the film's villain, it may or may not be Thanos. The heroic team of aliens will surely be facing some bad guys in the upcoming sequel, but Thanos is a whole other story.

"He will show up [in the sequel] if he helps our story and he will not show up at all if not. Thanos is not the most important thing in 'Guardians 2,' that's for d*** sure. There's the Guardians themselves and other threats the Guardians are going to be facing that are not Thanos," Gunn told Empire.

Thanos is a villain that has been greatly teased throughout Marvel's films, but it looks like they are saving him for the "Avengers: Infinity War" movies.

Fans shouldn't lose hope, however, because Karen Gillan is also reprising her role as Nebula. If the first film is any indication, then Gamora's evil sister will surely serve up a whole lot of chaos in the upcoming sequel. It has been reported, though, that the sisters' relationship will be delved into much deeper as well.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" will begin production in early 2016. The film is scheduled to hit cinemas on May 5, 2017.
