Guardians of the Galaxy broke US box-office records for 2014, raking in over $270+ million to date, surpassing Captain America: Winter Soldier's earnings of $259.7 million. Forbes foresees the movie's haul to hit $300 million in domestic sales, the first to do so for this year, with even more coming in from the international market. That makes it even more certain that Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is underway and can be expected to hit theaters on July 28, 2017.

In an interview with The Wrap last July, GotG's co-writer Nicole Perlman said, "They started to figure it out pretty quick when they started getting the reactions from the audience; it was a very positive reaction. Of course, they would want to make a sequel as long as it does well and people are excited about it, they'll wanna do a sequel. So, it's going to happen."

Many viewers certainly enjoyed the 10th film in Marvel's Cinematic Universe – even Iron Man thinks Guardians is a great movie. Robert Downey, Jr. told the Toronto Sun, "Galaxy in some ways is the best Marvel movie ever. And it's odd for someone with — on occasion — an ego the size of mine to actually say that!"

With such a positive response, it's expected that impatient fans will start speculating on what the team of unlikely heroes will face in the sequel.

Guardians of the Galaxy stars Chris Pratt as Peter Quill / Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Vin Diesel as Groot, and Bradley Cooper as Rocket.
