Google Nexus release date will most likely happen in the fall featuring the new Android L as its operating system.

Rumors went around the past few months claiming that Google will axe its Nexus line to be replaced by a new program dubbed as Android Silver. However, after Google confirmed that it will not let go of the Nexus line yet, this sparked speculations that the popular Nexus smartphone will be released later this year.

Google's head of Android engineering and the Nexus program, Dave Burke, told ReadWrite that the tech giant is still invested in the Nexus line and is not scrapping the program. Although Burke did not reveal any detail about the rumored Android Silver program, the Google executive said that it is wrong to assume that Google will end the Nexus program just because there is "something else". This is a clear hint that Android Silver will come soon.

Burke then revealed that his team is working on a new Nexus device, while another team is working on the new versions of Android. The report added that Google has a tradition of releasing a new Nexus device whenever it launched a new version of its Android OS.

Thus, consumers can expect that Google will expand the range of devices it will offer. It started with the cheaper line – Android One program. Moreover, the company unveiled the new Android L OS, which will arrive in the fall.

"When we are working, there are sort of two outputs. We're building a Nexus device and we're building the open source code. There is no way you can build the open source code without the phone or tablet or whatever you are building. You have to live and breathe the code you are developing," Dave Burke said at the recently concluded Google I/O Developers' Conference.

"You can't build a platform in the abstract, you have to build a device (or devices). So, I don't think can can or will ever go away. And then, I think Nexus is also interesting in that it is a way of us explaining how we think Android should run. It is a statement, almost a statement of purity in some respects. I don't see why we would ever turn away from that, it wouldn't make sense," he quickly added.

The alleged fall release date of Google Nexus 6 is backed up by the statement of Google's VP Sundar Pichai at Mobile World Congress early this year where he claimed that the Nexus 6 smartphone will be launched in the second half of the year.

Some of the purported features of Nexus 6 are: 5.2-inch full HD curved LCD display; MediaTek 64-bit SoC processor or a 64-bit Snapdragon chipset from Qualcomm; 20MP rear camera with HDR mode and 5MP front facing camera.
