"Finding Carter" became a hit since the series made its debut in 2014. The MTV show quickly gained a devoted following and its second season, originally slated to run for 12 episodes, was given an extra 12-episode order.

However, though the first season was unique since it covered a lot of issues, season 2 signaled a big change for the series as the show, which started out as a drama about a girl who learned that her mother was her kidnapper, suddenly placed the focus on Carter's (Kathlyn Prescott) relationships.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer Emily Whitesell talked about why the show focused less on the kidnapping storyline and why they chose to put the spotlight on Carter's life.

"As someone who creates series and tells stories all the time, you can't just continue to tell stories about a girl who was kidnapped," Whitesell explained. "That was her story but she settled into a new life and moved on."

The producer added that everything that Carter does in the future will be affected somehow by what happened to her, but eventually "that story runs out."

As of the moment, the show has yet to be renewed for a third season, but Whitesell said that everyone in the writers' room thought about a good cliffhanger for the end of season 2, which they thought would keep audiences interested in what happens to the characters.

Season 2 ended last month with Carter's best friend, Max (Alex Saxon), admitting that he killed Carter's former boyfriend Jared (Jackson Rathbone) to protect her. Carter convinced Max to tell the truth, and the finale ended with a cliffhanger, with Max now in the custody of the police.

Whitesell said that for season 3, she personally doesn't think that viewers would be interested in watching a huge legal battle, but added that what they want to do is retell details of the story and show how Max did not mean to kill Jared.
When asked whether they would pursue a storyline involving Crash and Carter, Whitesell said that Crash has become the person that Carter would want to love.

"They have a very deep bond and I'd love to play with what that means moving forward," she said.
