Grammy-nominated Christian recording artist Mali Music will be starring as Jesus in the new musical presentation on the life of Jesus Christ called Revival! The Experience.

It will be a "mixed media virtual experience" that is expected to be released in theatres this year.

The Christian Post reported that the teaser trailer showed the new project as somewhat similar to the iconic 1973 British musical Jesus Christ Superstar. Creators added that there is "a splash of The Wiz" in it. The project will be based on the Gospel of John's account of Jesus Christ.

Revival! The Experience takes a break from the normal Caucasian bearded Jesus Christ with Mali Music, who will sport a close-cropped haircut and mid-length beard for his acting debut..

The trailer shows Mali Music in the wilderness where he will confront the devil. There will also be scenes of his baptism and struggles with the cross.

Other actors in Revival! The Experience include Henry Lennix (Man of Steel, Ray, The Matrix Revolutions), as Pontius Pilate; Obba Babatundé (Silence of the Lambs) as Nicodemus; former Destiny's Child singer Michelle Williams as Mary Magdalen; singing legend Chaka Khan as Herodias; and Anthony Azizi (Eagle Eye,Transformers: Dark of the Moon) as Judas Iscariot.

The project will be directed by Obba Babatunde (Miss Evers' Boys, Introducing Dorothy Dandridge) and Danny Green (Mr. Sophistication). Lennix and Holly Carter, who produced "Preachers of L.A." are credited with the screenplay and also as producers in addition to David C. Waite (Xponent Media, Releve Entertainment and Jupiter Films).

Mali Music made waves in his career as an inspirational and gospel artist. He later moved on from the gospel genre and released his first mainstream and Grammy-nominated album in July 2014, entitled Mali Is... under RCA Records. Despite his transition, Mali Music stressed that he remains "grateful for and focused on his assignment from God."
