The upcoming episode, which also happens to be the 250th installment of the long-running police procedural series, was directed by the show's lead star Joe Mantegna, known for portraying the role of BAU supervisor David Rossi.

Showrunner Erica Messer shared with TVLine that the UnSub in the upcoming episode is called Sandman because he normally sprinkles sand into his victims' eyes. "It's pretty brutal but it's amazing," the showrunner revealed.

The official synopsis for the episode reads:

"The BAU is going to head to Wichita in search of an UnSub abducting children while their parents sleep. Also, Morgan will end up trying to find out who was responsible for his attack."

Messer said that the upcoming episode will feature a great cliffhanger that will make fans stay tuned until the next episode titled "A Beautiful Disaster," which is directed by another cast member, Matthew Gray Gubler.

In August 2015, Gubler revealed to Zap2it that the episode that he will direct for "Criminal Minds" season 11 will reveal that another BAU member is planning to leave the team.

"I am [directing]. There's a special episode," the actor, who portrays the role of genius FBI Special Agent Spencer Reid, said. "I almost don't want to give it away, but I might as well. It's the departure of one of the regular team members."

However, the actor chose not to reveal who is planning to bid BAU goodbye.

"Criminal Minds" season 11 episode 17 airs March 16 on CBS.
