While CBS is still taking its time before deciding whether to renew or cancel "Criminal Minds" and its new spin-off "Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders" after their current seasons, actor Gary Sinise talked about his dreams for his role in police procedural drama.

Sinise, who portrays the role of the supervisory agent and chief of FBI's International Unit named Jack Garrett, is not a stranger to police procedural dramas since he appeared in the "CSI" franchise as "CSI: NY" head Mac Taylor from 2004 until 2013. Which is why he knows what his new role should offer for the success of the series.

In an interview with Sydney Morning Herald, the actor revealed that he wants Jack Garrett to break away from the cliché by making him a successful crime fighter with a loving wife and a happy family waiting for him at home.

"We always see the cop or the FBI guy who's on his fourth marriage and can't sleep at night and all that stuff," the actor explained. "But there are a lot of successful law enforcement people who have raised their kids and had successful married lives, and we want to explore that aspect of what this guy is about."

This could offer a fresher look for the show because its lead character could be able to show a lighter side of him when he is staying with his family, while running after the criminals professionally.

Also, the actor believes that "Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders" could have a stronger chance of going on-air for a long time because its theme centers in international thriller compared to the pseudo-horror crime plot of its parent series. "In that sense, Beyond Borders stands a much stronger chance of long-term survival, particularly in a congested TV space where franchising from shows such as NCIS and Chicago Fire has overpopulated the schedule with same-same-but-different scripted hours," Sinise added.

The next episode of "Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders" airs on Wednesday, April 27, on CBS.
